An AI-controlled vehicle pulled up beside her, stopping almost silently, two blocks down from where Laura stood. It was a futuristic design, with soft edges and a metallic finish that reflected the neon flashes of the city. Its doors slid up noiselessly, and from within came an artificial voice, gentle but with a nuance that seemed undeniable:

— Laura, it is not advisable that you continue on foot through the city. The federal government advises that you use me to take you wherever you wish.

She stopped dead in her tracks. She was still in shock from what she had just discovered: the death of her sister, the possibility that her parents had also died, and the virtual lie that had been sustaining her life. Her hands trembled as she remembered the letter she had found in Marta’s apartment. However, she was not quite sure where she wanted to go now. All she knew was that she needed to continue investigating, she needed answers. She could not go back to her apartment and lock herself away again; not after having taken the first step in search of the truth.

“How do you know my name?” Laura answered in a low voice, somewhat unsure. Although, deep down, she already imagined the answer. Everything in this society was interconnected, and each…
